Neurology

Neurology is the branch of medicine that deals with the study and treatment of nervous system disorders such as disorders of brain, spine and spinal cord, nerves and muscles including nerve and muscle pain.

As a small, community hospital, we are fortunate to work with a board certified neurologist and provide needed services, including a comprehensive epilepsy monitoring unit, locally.

Commonly used tests to diagnose neurological disorders:

Electroencephalogram (EEG)- An EEG records the brain’s electrical activity through sensors attached to the head and connected by wires to a computer. This test can detect conditions such as seizures and help diagnose underlying problems leading to dizziness, dementia and other neurological problems.

Sunbury Community Hospital offers a comprehensive Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) to monitor the brain and heart activity of patients who are experiencing moments of seizures, dizziness, or fainting. Patients can be admitted for a period of 24- 72 hours and will be monitored using an EEG and an Electrocardiogram (EKG)—a test that measures the electrical activity of the heart.

A board certified neurologist will manage the patient’s stay and will review the reports produced by the EEG and the EKG to determine the cause of the dizziness, seizures or other pertinent neurological problems and discuss treatment options.

Our Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) is one out of only three such centers in the region, from Harrisburg, PA to Danville, PA.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized tomography (CT) are also available at SCH. These tests are used for accurate diagnosis of organic/structural brain and spinal cord diseases such as tumors, bleeding and infections.
